SMH is a new band

sauna6, Megan, and Hana recently started meeting up every week in Los Angeles to mess around and try to get a rise out of each other (musically speaking). Through their “sessions,” they found a sound of their own, and demos started to morph into singles.

They make electronic pop together as SMH: an acronym for their names as well as their general sentiment about things.

From the bedroom

During a writing session, you might find sauna6 at the computer, obsessing over waveforms until the noise coming out of the monitors evolves into something you haven’t heard before (derogatory). Megan Marshall might take a break from writing lyrics to swap with sauna and take a shift in the big boy chair.

Hana Antrim is lying on the bed murmuring half-formed sweet nothing melodies whilst also trying her darndest to outdo Megan’s wit in a shared lyrics note. Between the production and the writing, there’s much to think about! hmm….

Origins

sauna6’s production credits include work for renowned Aussie singer producer extraordinaire Kučka. Megan Marshall is a producer, songwriter and vocalist classically trained in piano and music theory. Hana Antrim is a songwriter and vocalist who also performs alt pop (?) as AntiHana.

They’re elder zillennial disciples of PC Music and hyperpop et al, with a fondness for taking production into maximalist, sometimes experimental territory. They want the melodies to be infectious, and are perfectly happy working with simple pop premises like love and sex and lack thereof.

iPhone camera?

Their single “Camera” gave the band a sense of what they wanted to keep pursuing together. It’s part of their debut EP, Family Values, along with two remixes by Mike Snatchers and data.cluster.

If data.cluster’s version sounds familiar, you may have heard it in Apple’s September keynote.

Send “Ex” to someone

Their listening recommendations include “Camera” and “Click Click” whilst edging the legal limits of tailgating distance and BAC, or “Now or Never” while edging (full stop) with #RainbowRoadVibes.

Throw on “Make U C” whilst writhing around in anguish, bedrotting and feeling that sweet post-doomscroll clarity. “Obsession” belongs on a shitty Bluetooth speaker in a grassy green field with your omnisexual polycule. And lastly, send “Ex” to someone you want to do s3ggs with.

Family Values is out now

Family Values compiles the music that grew out of SMH’s weekly sessions thus far, with “Ex” leading the release.
